There is a critical need for our profession to vigorously re-energize and adequately fund the soil science degree programs at our universities. Otherwise, our soil science profession will wither on the vine from a lack of qualified professional candidates in the future. We need a concerted effort from our peers and our major universities to focus on the importance of the soil sciences to basic public health, safety, and welfare. Currently this is not the case and trending downward, while public demand is increasing?


Aspiring soil scientists should focus on building a strong foundation in science and math, pursue relevant degrees, and gain practical experience through internships and research. The field offers diverse career paths that contribute to sustainable land use and environmental health.
